How to Change COM port number used for Serial Port

Step by step guide how to change your COM port for any Device. Changing the COM port is very common for newer computers in which the device is plugged into via USB. The COM Port number will often change each time a device is plugged into a different USB port. Most older versions of communications software do not have the higher COM port options.

Windows COM port number setting procedure

  1. Click Start > Click Settings(98,ME,2000 only) then Control Pane
  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon
  3. Then click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Double-click the Ports (COM & LPT) icon.
  5. Double click the COM port for your device to change
  6. Click the Port Settings Tab
  7. Then click Advanced below
  8. In the COM port number box, select the COM port number to change it to
  9. Click OK
  10. Sometimes a computer restart will be necessary sometimes not.
